Communities – Wednesday’s Question

Topical Storm: Library! So far, we’ve seen examples of business-centric, writing-centric, and music-centric topical centers. What other similar opportunities might there be in our communities? How do we ascertain which groups could most benefit from a topical center that encourages collaboration and innovation, and how do we inspire them?

    What about a library that is centered around providing services for people with special needs?  Librarians that are knowledgable on the subject could be available and appropriate modifications can be provided for services/materials.

      Hmm, I like the idea of possibly having an advocate for special needs services within the library. I don’t know if it would be a librarian position, or perhaps we could simply provide the space for someone outside of the library to use, as a way to connect with those in need of service. Then if they have question that person can’t answer, they’re in the perfect environment – the library – to get answers!

    What if libraries could provide career fairs? This would be helpful for those who go to the library looking for help in trying to apply for jobs online. This would be a great way to get the community and employers to interact and great networking tool.

      Ah, I like this idea, Erin. I’m guessing it would work best in large libraries that have plenty of space (I know quite a few small libraries that certainly wouldn’t have the capacity to host such an event). Then again, this brings us back to the idea of the “third space” and also the need for a physical space.

      Very good idea!  And in addition, this could include career-related workshops before the fairs.  (For example: the job application process, resume creating classes, job interview tips)

    I would love a film-centric center where patrons can get together and watch or discuss movies. The library could also provide resources about film (maybe exhibitions on film history or something) and organize “field trips” to theaters!
